“‘Inspiring Spaces’ is a system of destinations in Hickory and the linkages between them. In combination, they are a cohesive collection of important spaces within the public realm that play a key role in shaping the image of the City because, intentionally or not, they reveal what is special about our community, past and present. Much of what we learn about a place, we learn as we see and, in some instances, experience the spaces that comprise the public realm. The Inspiring Spaces project provides an opportunity to make a positive and lasting impression. Through design, we can enhance our existing spaces and create new spaces that tell the many stories of Hickory, the stories that celebrate the City’s history and heritage, the stories that build community pride, the stories that strengthen community ties, the stories that inspire future generations. The Inspiring Spaces Plan is a public realm master plan. The primary objective of this Plan is to enhance economic development efforts of many individuals and organizations throughout the Hickory area by defining a specific set of investment opportunities that will produce both tangible and intangible benefits. Capital improvements that stimulate private investment are crucial to strengthening the local economy and placing Hickory in a more economically competitive position. By investing in the public realm, the City can improve the visitor and resident experience, effectively reshape the image and perceptions of the City, and attract the private investment it desires. Through the process, a master plan that clearly delineates a variety of important spaces, such as the Waterfront, the Hickory Heritage Trail, the Main Avenue Linear Park and the Art Walk that links SALT Block to Union Square, has emerged. As a framework, the Inspiring Spaces Plan offers the guidance the City needs to identify and prioritize specific projects as well as a menu of strategies for implementing the Plan. However, more can be achieved with early participation of the private sector. Therefore, this Plan is designed for use by a wide variety of entities that are likely to be involved in implementation and recognizes a range of possible improvements in which the private sector can play a key role either independently or in partnership with the City.”
